If you flip your mouse over, you will likely see a glowing light. This is exactly how an optical mouse works. It uses a light emitting diode to illuminate your desk. A microscopic camera called a CMOS sensor snaps thousands of pictures every single second. A tiny processor inside the mouse compares these pictures to figure out exactly which direction and how fast your hand is moving.

Laser mice take this technology a step further. Instead of a standard LED light, they use an invisible laser. The laser penetrates deeper into the surface texture, allowing the mouse to track flawlessly on tricky surfaces like clear glass or glossy tables where standard optical mice often get confused.

Understanding DPI and Polling Rate

When you shop for a new mouse, you will usually see two main specifications plastered on the box.

  • DPI (Dots Per Inch): This dictates the sensitivity of your mouse. If you have a DPI of 800, moving your hand one physical inch moves the cursor 800 pixels on your monitor. High DPI is great for quick turns in video games, while lower DPI gives graphic designers pixel perfect control.
  • Polling Rate: Measured in Hertz, this tells you how often the mouse reports its exact position to the computer. A polling rate of 1000 Hz means your mouse updates the computer every single millisecond. Gamers need this instant response to avoid cursor lag during fast movements.
