Every time you browse the web, install a program, or even just leave your computer running, it quietly hoards “temporary” files. Over time, these files can bloat your hard drive, consuming gigabytes of space and slowing down your system.
Here is a complete guide to safely clearing out this digital clutter on both Windows and Mac.
For Windows Users
Windows offers two main ways to clear temporary files: using the built-in Storage Sense feature (the safest and easiest method) or deleting them manually.
Method 1: Using Storage Settings (Recommended)
1.Open Windows Settings:
Press the Windows key + I on your keyboard, or click the Start button and select the gear icon.
2.Navigate to Storage:
Click on System in the left menu, then select Storage on the right side.
3.Scan Temporary Files:
Click on Temporary files. Windows will take a moment to scan your drive and categorize what can be deleted.
4.Select and Remove:
Check the boxes next to the file types you want to delete (like “Temporary files,” “Thumbnails,” and “Delivery Optimization Files”). Click the Remove files button at the top of the list.
Method 2: The Manual Run Command
If you want to forcefully clear the primary temp folder yourself, you can use the Run dialog.
1.Open the Run Dialog:
Press Windows key + R to open the Run command window.
2.Access the Temp Folder:
Type %temp% into the box and press Enter. This opens the hidden folder where Windows stores active temporary data.
3.Select All Files:
Press Ctrl + A to select everything inside this folder.
4.Delete the Files:Skip files that are currently in use.
Press the Delete key. If a popup says “Folder In Use” or “File In Use,” check the box that says “Do this for all current items” and click Skip. This just means a running program is actively using that specific file.
For Mac Users
macOS handles temporary files a bit differently, often clearing them out in the background upon a simple restart. However, if you need to manually clear cache files to free up space, you can do so via Finder.
1.Open the Go to Folder Menu:
Click on the Finder icon in your dock. From the top menu bar, click Go, then select Go to Folder… (or press Shift + Cmd + G).
2.Navigate to Caches:
Type ~/Library/Caches into the search box and press Return.
3.Select and Delete:
Press Cmd + A to select all the folders. Right-click (or Control-click) and select Move to Trash.
4.Empty the Trash:
Right-click the Trash icon in your dock and select Empty Trash to permanently free up the space.
